We want our students to develop the knowledge, skills and resilience that will enable them to communicate and manipulate language independently.
We encourage our students to develop their confidence in speaking; to be willing to try, make mistakes and learn from them.
We foster classrooms where pupils enjoy learning about languages and other cultures and hope they chose to pursue further study in the future.
Our curriculum is delivered by subject specialists with strong linguistic knowledge and a deep understanding of how languages are learnt. Lessons are carefully planned to develop students’ expertise in vocabulary, grammar and phonics, with clear explanations and effective modelling helping pupils to understand and apply new language confidently. We promote high standards of literacy and oracy, providing frequent opportunities for students to listen, speak, read and write in the target language. Through consistently high expectations and positive classroom routines, we create learning environments where all students are encouraged to take risks, participate actively and strive for excellence in their language learning.
Our curriculum is designed to be cumulative and progressive. The sequencing is carefully thought-out to introduce students to progressively complex grammatical structures, so they can build on their knowledge and develop their ability to independently manipulate the vocabulary, structures and rules they are learning. For example, they are gradually introduced to a wider variety of verb tenses, interspaced with opportunities to revisit and consolidate those they have already learnt to conjugate. Moreover, we foster safe and engaging classrooms which are conducive to pupil participation and memory.
We recognise that language learning presents different challenges for different students, so our teaching is highly responsive to pupils’ needs. Teachers regularly check for understanding through questioning, retrieval practice and purposeful assessment, using this information to identify and address misconceptions before they become embedded. Scaffolding and support are carefully adapted to help students access new content whilst maintaining high levels of challenge, and timely feedback enables pupils to reflect on their learning and make meaningful improvements. By responding to students’ strengths, gaps and emerging needs, we help every learner make sustained progress towards becoming a confident and independent communicator.
